what is the point of switching energy supplier

5 May 2012 updated. Is it worth switching energy supplier?

Surely when you switch gas and electricity supplier, the prices will just go up again anyway. So what is the point of switching in the first place?

If you are considering switching to another energy supplier, you have made a step in the right direction. The suppliers don’t come to you and offer their cheapest energy deal.

If you have never taken things into your own hands before, you will be paying standard energy prices. This is the default tariff which the energy suppliers place you on. From here, it is down to you to find a more suitable tariff.

When you compare your gas and electricity prices with a comparison site, you will be given results based on your personal consumption. This may not be the same results which your next door neighbour has. because the results can be different depending on how much gas and electricity you consume, it is best to compare energy prices yourself!

Put it this way – If you were handed £100 cash just for the sake of switching to a different tariff, would you refuse it?

Most of the energy suppliers are touting for your business through comparison sites. They offer introductory prices to entice you in. These lower prices are normally set below their standard prices for about one year!

Once your online introductory tariff comes to an end your new supplier will transfer you onto their standard online prices.

You may want to shop around again at this point, to find out which supplier is now offering the cheapest online introductory enticing deal.

So, can you even be bothered to go through the process of switching energy supplier?

This is entirely up to you. But the switching process is very straight forward these days. You keep the same meters, pipes and wires. Nothing changes, apart from where your bill comes from!

The real question is – Do you really want cheaper gas and electricity?

So far, our survey indicates that 83% of our visitors are on an expensive tariff with their energy supplier. This is the reason why £4 billion in energy discounts went unclaimed last year.

Your default tariff is called STANDARD ENERGY. If you are on this tariff, you will be able to get your share of the unclaimed discounts. These discounts are only available to People who take action themselves. The great thing about comparing energy deals on the internet, is you are in control, and not at the mercy of one individual from an energy supplier telling you they are the cheapest!
