Martin, I wonder if you can help. I want to be able to work out how much gas and electricity I am using from my meter readings, but i am not sure how to go about it.

Hi Kerry, thanks for your question. More and more people are keeping track of their energy consumption these days because of the rising costs in gas and electricity bills.

      Electricity meter:
      This one is straight forward.
Each unit you have used on your electricity is classed as a KWH, this is what your electricity usage is charged at.

So, if you pay 12 pence per KWH and you have used 1000 units you would assume your bill would be £120.

However, there are other charges to consider:

You will either be on a 2 tier tariff or a daily standing charge.

2 tier tariff means you pay a higher unit rate for the first so many units you use.

Example: you may pay 16 pence per KWH for the first 225 Kwh per quarter.

If you are trying to work out your bill over a shorter period, then you may find it easier to price:

your first 3 kwh per day at the higher rate of 16 pence per day and the remainder kwh at 12 pence per day.

You pay 5% VAT on energy, so add this at the end.

The sums: for 1 week consumption. meter reading at beginning of week 40965: meter reading at end of week 41040: you have used 75 Kwh

      75 – 3 kwh per day for 7 days = 21
      75 – 21 = 54
21 kwh are charged at the higher rate of 16 pence = £3.36
54 kwh are charged at the lower rate of 12 pence = £6.48
price of electricity consumed = £9.84
      VAT 5% = 49 pence
total charge for one week consumption = £10.33

Now you have had the basics of electricity calculating explained, lets look at the gas.

      Gas meter:

      This is a tricky one.
The units on your gas meter are most likely not in KWH, so there is a formula to convert the units into KWH, and there is a conversion factor to convert with the calorific value in your area. The calorific value may change on a daily basis.

So you may ask! what chance do I stand.

To simplify this, I have provided a calculator. You will get access to it on the right hand side of this page, under handy tools.

I hope this has answered your question Kerry. If you have any further question please refer them to our forum, you will also find the link to this on the right hand side!

hi martin i used ur site as i thot i was payn 2 much 4 my electricity so i switchd and havnt bn happier thank u very much

  3. martins blog says:

Due to the interest in this topic, you will now find a gas reading convertor in the right hand column. Because the calorific value of the gas you use changes on a daily basis, the calculator works out your KWH consumption based on an average figure of 40. You will find this will produce a figure which is as close as you will get to being 100% accurate.

martin imageWhether you are looking for the best site to compare prices and switch your gas and electricity supplier, or just want to confirm you have found your cheapest energy tariff, we can help you. I'm Martin, and this is my Blog. I review all the energy suppliers tariffs, and let you know what I think of them.

Please answer our 1 click survey when it pops up. This is so we can better understand our visitors.
Nothing else happens after you select an option. It just records your answer for our records. If you make a worthwhile comment, I will post it on the survey page.

So far, our survey indicates that 83% of our visitors are on an expensive tariff with their energy supplier. This is the reason why £4 billion in energy discounts went unclaimed last year.

Your default tariff is called STANDARD ENERGY. If you are on this tariff, you will be able to get your share of the unclaimed discounts. These discounts are only available to People who take action themselves. The great thing about comparing energy deals on the internet, is you are in control, and not at the mercy of one individual from an energy supplier telling you they are the cheapest!
