How to choose an energy tariff that is right for you

Energy supplier logos. Who is the cheapest energy supplier?

Avoid the energy trap by choosing an energy tariff that is right for you.

Half of the UK households are paying more than they need to for their gas and electricity. You don’t have to be amongst this number. You are in control, you have the choice to get out of the energy trap. But you need to act, you need to take control of your own energy prices.

“Easier said than done”, I hear you say:

So what is your excuse for staying on a Standard Energy Tariff?

  • You don’t believe you will really save by switching?
  • You don’t understand it?
  • They are all the same?
  • The energy companies are all owned by the EU?
  • It’s a scam?
  • Or do you have another reason for paying the highest energy prices?

Whatever reasons you have for not switching to a cheaper energy deal, put all that aside, and get yourself off that expensive energy tariff!

Standard Energy tariffs (Default tariffs)

These are the tariffs you are placed on when you move to a new house, or when you don’t switch to a cheaper online tariff. These are the most expensive tariffs. They are a starting point to start shopping around for a cheaper price. Put it this way – If someone delivered a bag of sugar to you every week and charged you £1 for it, would you be happy paying that when you know you could buy it elsewhere for 69 pence?

Getting a better energy deal

You need to do this yourself. Don’t rely on someone else picking a tariff for you. If you are on Standard Energy, you will make a decent saving only when you compare prices and switch yourself.

You need to know what your existing tariff is. If you haven’t switched for over a year, you are most likely on Standard Energy.

You need to know how much you use. It is best if you know your consumption in KWH. If not, then knowing how much you spend is fine.

What about the Energy Price Cap?

Have you even heard of the price cap? This is a maximum price set by OFGEM that your supplier can charge you per KWH for your gas and electricity.

This only applies to those on the most expensive tariffs. Don’t be someone who is eligible for the price cap, you will be paying the highest prices. OFGEM put this in place so the suppliers cannot charge those who don’t switch much more than they are already paying.

Laughing matter

It’s no laughing matter. You will save money if you carry out your own comparison and complete the switch using your own actual details on your usage.

When does it go wrong?

In this scenario, things can go wrong when you listen to someone else.

For example:

You receive a phone call from someone who says they can save you money on your energy prices. You tell them you currently spend £120 a month, they tell you that they can switch you to a tariff that will only cost £60 a month.

This is going to raise it’s ugly head over time. No energy supplier is offering gas and electricity at half price. Direct Debits are calculated using your annual energy consumption over 1 year then dividing that by 12 to give your monthly amount. If you have not paid enough to cover your actual consumption, your original quote can increase to much more than you were paying on your previous tariff. Don’t fall for it.

Get your quotes and switch yourself based on your actual consumption.

Switching to the absolute cheapest energy deal is not always a good idea. There are a lot of new energy suppliers. Some are going out of business. Some are not always getting it right. Play it safe by choosing a tariff shown in Todays Top Tariffs

We don’t particularly favour these tariffs, we just list them because they are a safer option than many of the other tariffs available.

Get it done

Get a hold of your energy tariff information from a bill or a statement. Get quotes and get away from those expensive tariffs. Savings will be more than shown at the moment because the Standard energy price increase doesn’t come into force until April 1st.  The ball is in your court!
